Taiwan, hi!
Did you expect someone to send you chocolates by mail?

[oh, he gets it; and he's embarrassed. the next comes a few minutes later.]

I don't... think so!
I've put them in the kitchen - in case you would like some too.

[ he'd saved up and bought a gaming console not too long ago; having little to no games to go with it, makoto was nice enough to lend him a few when he was over their house a few days earlier. … it was pretty easy to guess where most of his weekend went. at any rate, on an errand to pick up dinner for his family, makoto's house was in the area so he'd brought the finished games with him to drop off on the way back.

it wasn't anything important, so he didn't need to call in advance or anything right? what could go wrong.

[ what incredible patience… ]

[ the humming itself is enough of a telltale sign of what was about to unfold (he couldn't hear it clearly, but simply being able to hear it was enough) — so the moment the door opens, an arm shoots our right away, revealing two bags.

… one contains the games, and the other a small variety of snacks as thanks. ]

I'm dropping this off for Tachibana.

[ not even a greeting back. . . no eye contact, either. ]

[Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! It is a time of generosity, and so Vietnam would like to share some food that one can share with family and friends. A basket will be discovered on your doorstep containing some bánh quy bơ quế (butter cookies with the best Vietnamese cinnamon she can get her hands on), and an assortment of mứt (candied fruit preserves) for the New Year.

There's also a box with a collection of J** C*** CDs, and this poster, not that it's Jay Chou or anything! (it is). A card is included:]

Taiwan,

Chúc Mừng Giáng Sinh! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

May your new year be prosperous and successful. You'd be surprised what I managed to dig up in some of the unusual parts of the stores.

[ On the 24th, there will be a package in the mailbox wrapped in brown paper and tied with pink ribbon, addressed to Taiwan. Inside is a pink knitted scarf with a felt seal stitched onto one of the ends, sort of like this. There's also a note, which reads: ]

Merry Christmas, Taiwan.

[ It's the happiest time of the year! That means presents. Lots of presents. Hong Kong will add a few to the pile in the form of his gifts, delivered to your doorstep!

Inside the festively decorated bag, you'll find a small container of gingerbread men, women, and children. Each is uniquely decorated and adorned with icing, gumdrops, licorice, and the odd jelly bean. Don't ask about the jelly beans. The bag also contains a bottle of wine if you happen to be in an adult slot and a bottle of spiced cider for the kiddos. Also in the bag are several small paper cutouts, made from delicate red paper and intended to be pasted in your window. ]

[ Taiwan's gift also includes a six-foot tall tube. Inside is a floor-to-ceiling poster of Jay Chou. Best not to ask where he got that. ]
